Recording Eyesy into iMac

Hey, first-time poster here. I looked into the other thread about this subject, but I’m just looking for a little more clarification. If I want to record the visuals from Eyesy into my mac (late 2012 iMac 27"), I’m going to have to buy another piece of external hardware such as the Elgato Game Capture? I had high hopes of simply being able to run Eyesy’s HMDI out --> HDMI/Thunderbolt converter --> iMac, and then screen capture through Quicktime or something.

Sorry if this was already clear in a previous thread, I’m not a tech minded person, I just make music and am trying to up my music video game. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello NateLeslie,

Yes, you will need some kind of video capture device. (Like the Elgado Cam Link or the Blackmagic Ultrastudio Recorder 3G)
A Thunderbolt > HDMI cable can only be used to output a video signal from the computer, and not the other way around.

Once you have a capture device working, there are many options to record the video feed, quicktime being one of them.

We’ve been getting many requests for assistance getting video into a computer. We hope this new manual section about capture cards will help:

What about ipads? there is lightning to hdmi converter. will that work?

As far as I know, those Lightning-to-HDMI adapters are for iPad output only.

I use a fairly inexpensive HornetTek Capture Card for recording and streaming, works great for me. the only downside is that it only captures at 60 fps, but that hasn’t been a problem at all for any of my captures. I use Quicktime or OBS as the recording software.
