hello, what is the video specification of the composite output in Eyesy?

The EYESY’s composite output can be configured for NTSC or PAL formatted signal. To select your format, see the last section of Chapter Four of the [manual](https://www.critterandguitari.com/manual?m=EYESY_Manual#4-accessing-eyesy-from-elsewhere).

Here are the resolutions of the two standards:
PAL: 768x576
NTSC: 640x480

connecting via HDMI my devices are recognising Eysey as 1280x720p device with 60Hz. Is there an option to increase the HDMI output to 1920x1080p 60Hz?

The problem is, that nearly all modes work with hardcoded positions. So a larger video-out does not help because the vectors do not point to the full range.

It might be interesting to replace all absolute x/y position definitions by a definition which is relative to the video resolution (see ETC-topic [Use screen.get\_width() in a mode - #3 by fanwander](https://forum.critterandguitari.com/t/use-screen-get-width-in-a-mode/3634/3))

On the EYESY this is already done for all the built in modes, so that they work at different resolutions.

Increasing res to 1920 will cause many of the modes to run more slowly. Changing to 1920 is possible, and the modes will still have the same proportions, but the change has to be done manually by editing /boot/config.txt

I don’t think refresh can be modified internally. Of course there are external options like dedicated video scalers and some video mixers have the built-in scaler. Also, it’s possible to change the resolution and refresh rate in computer, for example while working with already recorded material.

Apparently Blackmagic Design capture devices are accepting PAL signal only with the resolution of 720x576, stealing 27648 pixels from every frame. Is there a way to change the PAL resolution in Eyesy?

Yes, by editing the config.txt file.
Here are the available options:
[https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/computers/config\_txt.html#video-options](https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/computers/config_txt.html#video-options)

but…

It looks like Blackmagic is forcing the resolution/aspect ratio to 720x576 since that isn’t an option for aspect ratios available in the Raspberry Pi’s _config.txt_. 720x576 is a ratio of 5:4. The link above shows the available options on the rPi are:

![rPi_aspect](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex035/uploads/critterandguitari/original/2X/0/037732c66e5803ae2f80457e0567522a6fac6cf0.png)

Composite video resolution is mostly defined by the number of scan lines along the vertical axis. The majority of the [PAL format variants have 576 ‘active’ vertical lines](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL#PAL_broadcast_systems)…so your screenshot is showing the correct number. Therefore, I don’t think that the Blackmagic device is trimming any of the image, but rather squishing the horizontal edges towards each other to change the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 5:4. Is there a setting in Media Express to change the aspect ratio?

Here is the same mode recorded via HDMI in 720p60Hz.

 ![blackmagickdesign hd](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex035/uploads/critterandguitari/original/2X/b/becac8eb97fc5aa896e65aa1a85eae786d5048c2.png)
Notice how much more material is available on the very left side of the recording window? I have a feeling that there may still some trimming going on. However, I would also agree with the squishing possibility because of some weird horizontal artefacts visible in other recordings. Sadly, Media Express is rather strict with the formats it accepts (adding another screenshot) and changing the aspect ratio during the capturing is not an option. I will experiment with different resolutions and report back when I find something helpful. It’s also a ton of fun working with the composite video, it was good idea to add that option.

Thanks for the update with the screenshot from HDMI output. Yes, it looks like the Blackmagic is trimming some off the left side! Sorry I didn’t catch that before.

You can use another program to capture video with the Blackmagic. Maybe it’s worth trying Quicktime or a video editing program (iMovie, Premiere, etc.) to see if there are better results…
