Major OG organelle troubleshooting

Gear got moved around the office, and when I went to hook the OG Organelle back up, she didn’t make a sound :(. No sound from either headphone jack nor L/R outputs despite VU meters showing “output”.

For good measure, I reflashed the SD with the latest OS but no dice. Same problem. Should hear audio, get nothing from any output jacks. So what – software is fine; screen is fine; hardware problem I guess.

Unfortunately I’m in Europe so its unlikely that it makes much sense to ship it to CG for repair.

Whats left? We open her up! (Can’t break it more, right? This is patently false, BTW; I can certainly destroy it more)

NO electronics experience here, so I was just looking for shit stains, broken solder joints, obvious problems. Something possessed me to start jumping things though.

Long story short – if I connect the two pins (highlighted in red) of the voltage regulator (big blue circle) I get proper audio (sounds right, anyway) through the headphone jack.

So now what. Like I said, 100% ignorant of electronics/circuit design, so I can’t take the next step. Anyone got any advice?

Hmm I’m not sure what that middle pin is connected to, but might be connected to output of the voltage regulator. If that is the case, you are shorting the input (5V) to the output (supposed to be 3.2V)… not a good idea and might damage parts on the board. I would instead check the voltage rails with a multi meter if you have one. Or contact us about a fix / replacement.

Hey Owen…

Oh yea. I was fully aware of the risks I was taking – admittedly glad I didn’t kill anything at this point though.

The voltages seem ok. Top pin (perspective based on the above pic; Vin I guess) reads at about 5v, the middle pin (nothing listed on the spec sheet) and back bit (output on spec sheet) come in at about 3.2v, and the last bottom pin (adjustment?) lands at 1.9v.

So just as you say, it seems. And yup, I was likely shorting Vin to Vout (!). Any guess as to why that would correct the audio problem?

More ignorance – When you say check the voltage rails, what do you mean specifically?

Part of my willingness to experiment is just the age of the unit. I think I bought it, like, 6 years ago in Zurich.

At any rate, thanks for the reply and maybe we can get this sorted?
